How to Tell Where Your Ad Spend Is Actually Going
A plain-English guide for small business owners who run ads but never know what worked. Here is how to trace every dollar from spend to revenue.

If you have ever handed a few thousand dollars to an agency or boosted a post and then quietly wondered, “did that actually do anything?”, you are not alone. It is the single most common frustration we hear from small business owners: money goes out, a vague report comes back, and nobody can tell you what it bought.
Here is the good news. You do not need to be a data analyst to know where your ad spend goes. You need three things set up correctly.
1. Conversion tracking that actually fires
A “conversion” is any action worth money to you: a form fill, a phone call, a booking, a purchase. If these are not tracked properly, every report after that point is fiction.
Make sure each meaningful action sends a conversion event to your ad platforms and to GA4. Then spot-check it. Submit a test lead and confirm it shows up. You would be amazed how many accounts are quietly mistracking the one number that matters.
2. One dashboard, not five tabs
Your Google Ads dashboard says one thing, Meta says another, and your sales spreadsheet says a third. The fix is a single view that ties spend to conversions to revenue, broken out by channel.
When it is set up right, you can answer the only questions that matter at a glance:
- How much did we spend on each channel?
- How many leads or sales did each one produce?
- What did it cost us per result, and what did we get back?
3. Attribution you can explain
Attribution just means deciding which channel gets credit when a customer touches more than one. You do not need a PhD-level model. You need a consistent, explainable one, plus a human who can tell you, in plain English, “Google search is driving most of your booked revenue; Facebook is filling the top of the funnel.”
The test for any agency or marketer
Ask one question: “Can you show me where every dollar went last month, and what it produced?” If the answer is a glossy report full of impressions and “reach” but no path from spend to revenue, keep looking.
