Google Ads vs. Meta Ads: Where Small Businesses Should Start
Google Ads or Meta Ads for your small business? A plain-English breakdown of when to use each, what they cost, and where to put your first ad dollars.

When a small business asks us where to put their first ad dollars, the honest answer is: it depends on whether people are already searching for what you sell. Here is the simple way to decide.
Google Ads: catch existing demand
Google Ads (search) puts you in front of people actively looking for your product or service right now. Someone typing “emergency plumber Knoxville” has their wallet out. That intent makes search ads efficient for businesses where customers search by need.
Use Google Ads when:
- People search for your service by name or problem.
- You sell something urgent or considered (services, repairs, B2B).
- You want leads or calls quickly.
Meta Ads: create demand
Meta (Facebook and Instagram) shows your ad to people based on who they are, not what they searched. Nobody is on Instagram looking for your offer, so you have to interrupt them with something compelling. That makes Meta great for visual products, awareness, and retargeting.
Use Meta Ads when:
- Your product is visual or impulse-friendly (ecommerce, local consumer brands).
- You want to build awareness and retarget website visitors.
- Your audience is well defined by interests or behaviors.
What they cost
Both run on auctions, so there is no fixed price. What matters is cost per result, not cost per click. A “cheap” click that never converts is expensive. We start small, measure cost per lead or sale, and scale what proves out.
Where to start
If customers search for what you do, start with Google. If your product is visual or you need to build awareness, start with Meta. Most small businesses end up using both, with Meta retargeting the traffic Google brings in. The key is starting with one, tracking it properly, and only adding the second once the first is working.
